Chan-wook Park's Oldboy is a fantastic movie that's incredibly distinctive and unique. The story of a man who is suddenly released from 15 years of forced imprisonment in a Seoul apartment explores some pretty heady themes, the most important of which is revenge. In his exploration of his own past and the motivations someone might have for consigning him to such a fate, he investigates his childhood in a scenic Korean village.
It's safe to say that Spike Lee's version is going to be very different.
Very little has been leaked about how the film will play out. Naturally, it's going to take place in New York, and while the framework of the plot will remain the same, it's safe to say that there will be some significant differences. Josh Brolin will portray the protagonist (who will certainly not be named Oh Dae-su as in the original), and there are also parts being played by Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and District 9's Sharlto Copley -- but it isn't yet clear what their roles will be.
