Today, Deadline reported that the biopic of the late Tupac Shakur is finally happening. Around three years ago it was reported that the biopic was still in the works with Antoine Fuqua to direct a script from Oscar-nominated screenwriters Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson.
However, now it seems the film will go into production under a new script from Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft. Filming will begin in February 2014 in Atlanta, GA. The projected budget is set at $45 million and will be financed by Emmett/ Furla/ Oasis Films and Morgan Creek Productions.
While it is unclear if Fuqua will still serve as director, an unlikely person has jumped on board to executively produce the film: Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur. She has also cleared the rights to Tupac's long-listed musical catalog.
However there still remains the question of who will play Tupac Shakur. While it is still up in the air, two notable actors are possible candidates: Anthony Mackie, who also played Tupac in the Biggie biopic Notorious, and Michael B. Jordan in Fruitvale Station. A synopsis for the film has described it as “centering on the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, from his emergence as a young artist, through his imprisonment, and last prolific years that catapulted him into the upper echelon of American cultural icons.”
