The wait is over for Americans. Skyfall, the latest James Bond film, opened this weekend in North America, and it's boasting a very impressive box office performance.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film made $87.8 million in North America this weekend. The four-day total, adding in Thursday IMAX showings, puts it at $90 million. Needless to say, it nabbed the number one spot. Adding that amount to its overseas earnings, that puts the film at $518.6 million worldwide. Not only is that simply a remarkable box office haul; it has also broken records for the Bond franchise.
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first Bond film, and it also marks the biggest Bond opening in North America. Not only that, but the film is well on its way to beating star Daniel Craig's previous two Bond films, Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale, in the worldwide box office. Those films made $586.1 million and $594.2 million, respectively.
The film also set a record for the best IMAX opening for a nonsummer premiere, making $13.1 million domestically.
Sony's Rory Bruer is thrilled about the film's success: "The holds have been extraordinary and people will want to see this film again and again."
Wreck-It Ralph came in second with $33.1 million, and Flight soared into third with $15.1 million.
