After an incredible box office run, it's no wonder Sony is seeking to extend the success of Hotel Transylvania by planning a sequel and setting a release date.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hotel Transylvania 2 is being planned for a Sept. 25, 2015 release date, even though the movie's in the very early stages and hasn't even found its director. This news comes just after Skyfall director Sam Mendes lamented the current Hollywood trend of announcing a release date before a script even exists, which is what happened when he received a pitch for The Avengers.
The September release date is similar to this year's film (released Sept. 28). The spooky animated comedy proved successful in the weeks leading up to Halloween.
The director of the first Hotel Transylvania, Genndy Tartakovsky, is going on to helm a new Sony Popeye movie, which is set for a Sept. 26, 2014, debut.
Hotel Transylvania, featuring voice work from Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg and Selena Gomez, has proven to be a huge box office success, earning $253 million worldwide. It remained toward the top of the domestic box office for multiple weeks, and it is the highest-grossing Sony Pictures Animation film of all time.
