It seems as though every week another one of radio's top artists is being sued for alleged copyright infringement by an unknown artist most have never heard of. Usually it's for similar musical timbre or lyrics, but this time it's for what singer-songwriter Allison Burnett of Alabama calls a "similar vocal motif" between her 2010 track, "Ah, It's A Love Song" and Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time."
The main targets of the lawsuit are Adam Young, who performs under the moniker of Owl City, Matthew Thiessen and Brian Lee who co-wrote the song. Burnett claims that the song's success and her fan's accusations that she in fact copied the “Good Time” have caused her "emotional and psychological damage." Upon listen, similarities between both songs seem sparse but the lawsuit claims that songwriters used identical pitch sequence, rhythmic construction, melodic contour and more.
