Geography scribbles its impression on some band's music, but in the case of Protomartyr, Detroit pushes and shoves around the foursome's guttural, urgent post-post anthems. Their dark fervency and swaggering vocals is a closer relative of Scandinavian or British acts like Holograms and Eagulls than the Americana of compatriots like Parquet Courts. Living in a post-industrial wasteland, where even the ultra-cheap real estate prices couldn't convince enough people to revive the bankrupt city, playing crapulously sounds only logical.

Protomartyr's second LP, Under Color of Official, is set to release on April 8 on Hardly Art. The first single, "Scum, Rise!", hints more polish than their debut, No Passion All Technique, yet firmly grasping the titilating balance of chaos with melody.
