You may or may not remember 1992. The Berlin Wall had come down, the U.S. was head honcho on the world stage, and action movies were reaching their apex. Mixed in with releases featuring Steven Seagal and Bruce Willis was Universal Soldier. It starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as resurrected and enhanced Vietnam War casualties forced to complete missions for the government with little memory of their previous lives.
It's not a terrible movie, but it's understandable that it's gone under the radar for a while. However, unbeknownst to most folks, it's actually had a lively existence in a direct-to-video franchise and a handful of video games.
The series has recently poked its head back above water and is back in the mainstream, 20 years later, with Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning. Van Damme and Lundgren are back, and this time the film seems to be filled with more pathos and existential questions than prior installments.
