'Figure 8' Mural Repainted For Ninth Anniversary Of Elliott Smith's Death

Today (October 21) marks the ninth anniversary of Elliott Smith's tragic death, and as a tribute to the late singer-songwriter, a group called the Punk Rock Marthas set out to repaint the famous mural featured on his acclaimed 2000 album, Figure 8

The mural is in Los Angeles' Silverlake neighborhood, and in the twelve years since the album art was created has been badly damaged by graffiti. The renovated art piece now includes Smith's lyrics featured on paper flowers on the red, wavy line, maps of his former residences and paper cranes on the black lines, and messages from fans on the white section.

The Punk Rock Martha's went to Twitter to describe the additions: "Red-every line from every song. Black-his life + 1000 paper cranes. White-fan messages from all 9 years <3" they tweeted aside a photo of the revamped mural.

Along with this act of kindness, the group is joining forces with Malo Restaurant to host a memorial of sorts. They describe the event on Facebook as such: "On the 9th anniversary of Elliott's passing, The Punk Marthas and Malo Restaurant (the site of the Figure 8 album cover photo) will be having live music, food, Elliott Smith swag, a silent acution and other treats to celebrate his life and raise money for Free Arts for Abused Children, which is a beneficiary to his estate that puts some love back into our local community."

For those of you living in the Los Angeles area, the event runs from 5 pm until 9 pm at Malo (4326 W Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, California 90029).
