Photo and Video Gallery of Small Black at Bunk Bar in Portland, OR (June 09, 2013)
In support of Limits of Desire - the long-awaited follow-up to 2010's New Chain LP, Small Black treated the Sunday crowd with their soaring pop songs, reaching beyond the walls of Bunk Bar and into the clear night sky. Known more for its sandwiches, Bunk Bar has been booking some of the buzziest indie bands. While its SE industrial location and the casual intimacy suits well for Portland's concertgoers, the lighting, the acoustics, and the lack of a green room is a bit of a challenge for the performers and the journalists. Still, the Brooklyn foursome managed to set up their intricate maze of effects pedals, coalescing all the audio sources to light up the small venue with crystalline new wave of kaleidoscopic production.
Prior to their stage time, Small Black posed for a photo series, sponsored by Stumptown's famous VooDoo Doughnut. Usually we only have about 10 minutes to shoot, and sometimes I do try to get creative. Echoing the Brooklyn band's' latest album title, Limits Of Desire, the straws that has been dormant in my kitchen seemed to emanate the idea of capping the craving.
Catch Small Black on tour now through September, including dates with STRFKR.
