Rarely do movies stop at the original production these days. Soon sequels and remakes hit the theaters, and some movies even get turned into Broadway musicals, which then spawn movie musicals, which then spawn sequels and remakes, and so on. Some movies get adapted into television shows. It was recently announced that Bravo is developing a series based on the high school dark comedy Heathers. Now last year's raunchy comedy Bad Teacher is getting the TV treatment, thanks to CBS.
Vulture reports that a half-hour sitcom based on the Cameron Diaz film, which made $100 million, is in development for CBS and Sony Pictures TV.
While this might sound unoriginal and unappealing to film and TV buffs who yearn for original material, there are a few promising names behind the series. Hilary Winston, who formerly wrote for Community and currently writes for Happy Endings, is writing and producing the single-camera project. It doesn't stop there. Former Office writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who wrote the movie, are executive producers.
Talented names aren't a guarantee that a show will be great, however, so we'll have to wait and see how this turns out. It will be interesting to learn who will be playing each character, since the original had such big names as Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel.
