It sure feels like it’s been longer than three years since Black Rebel Motorcycle Club put out an album. They came around in my town (Portland) least couple of times. And each time, I asked myself, “Do they have new material to promote?”. Not that it made much difference. Since their self-titled debut in 2001, the Californians have churned out six records of relative consistency - whether acoustic-based (Howl), bluesy (Baby 81), or totally instrumental (The Effects of 333).
On BMRC’s forthcoming LP, Specter At The Feast, will that evenness finally quiver? Will we hear the warmth of California - where the the album was recorded between Dave Grohl’s studio in Los Angeles, Joshua Tree at the Rancho De La Luna Studio, and in singer/guitarist Robert Been’s hometown of Santa Cruz. How far have they distanced from their primary days, when people digested them as the best consolation to The Jesus and Marychain? Or what kind of impact has the passing of Been’s father (member of The Call) have had... Maybe you’re not entertaining the same questions, but you can get a hefty sample of Specter At The Feast, before its release date on March 18 via free EP, Let The Day Begin - downloadable from BMRC’s website. But we’ve already had slices of of the pie with the single, “Let The Day Begin”, a month ago and a lyric video of “Returning” posted this past Tuesday. Think my questions have been answered.
The black leather-jacketed trio will play four shows in the UK before touring North America - Sasquatch appearance included!
