The Rolling Stones' new video for "Doom and Gloom" is a fantastic mess of b-roll gore (exploding heads, anyone?), zombies, waste, bloody noses, and a badass, topless Noomi Rapace thrashing beneath the beams of a corrupt infrastructure. It's a lot to digest, but the Stones are not exactly a band that shies from grandiosity.
The video was directed by Jonas Akerlund, the visionary behind Madonna's "Ray of Light" and Prodigy's unpredictable late-night dalliance with carnage in "Smack My Bitch Up." "Doom and Gloom" takes literal cues from the song's lyrics, with references to economic inequality, fracking, and excessive consuming (Rapace burns a pile of money, stuffs her face with burgers, and appears as a gun-toting oil outlaw complete with rampant sideburns). At the end of all things there's Mick Jagger, whose unrivaled energy on stage--any stage--proves that even at 69 years of age he still rocks hardest of them all.
