Dramatic irony -- so much of modern comedy is based on this concept. When the audience knows more than a character does, and it informs their perceptions of a scene, hilarity often ensues. This trick is as old as ancient Greek drama, so it's no surprise that it finds its way into contemporary comedies all the time.
The most modern form of dramatic irony that everyone recognizes is when one character speaks badly about another while the second person is right behind them! Classic!
A twist is when the first character sees the look on someone's face and determines that -- oh no -- the person they've been talking about is right behind them.
