Today, The New York Times posted a short film about Amtrak entitled Off The Rails. The film, which accompanies a recent expose on the economic patterns that have emerged around the Amtrak line that connects New York to DC, is a nearly five minute long clip.
"You can see all the economic change of the last century," the narrator says at the beginning of the film, "the good and the very bad, right along the Amtrak rail lines that go from New York to Washington D.C. You pass by eight of the 10 richest counties in America and you go through half a dozen of its broken, most dangerous cities and everwhere, one way or another, there are people finding a way to make a living."
Amidst the poetic narration and citizens' confessionals is an effective, emotive score written by The Beastie Boys' Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz). Though he does not rap on the track, it is refreshing to know that he's still hard at work making music.
