Colorado musician James Cooley makes music under the name Mesita. His latest track, "XYXY," is the first single from Future Proof, the follow-up to April's The Coyote. Mesita makes deceptively simple, tuneful music that is emotional without being cloying, danceable without being tiresome, and interesting without being pretentious. That's a tall order in this musical universe!
Live drums, electro drones, and multi-tracked vocals wiggle somewhere between jazz, Miike Snow-style electronica, and the piano songs that soundtrack A Charlie Brown Christmas. That piano element takes "XYXY," a song about being gay and growing up in the closet ("Straighten out your thoughts," Cooley admonishes in the first verse) to a new level of emotionalism. The quiet little solo at 2:24 is possibly the loneliest thing you will hear for a very long time. Future Proof will be released in 2013. Listen below, and watch Cooley's "dizzy video visualization" of the track too.
