The website Who Sampled has compiled an exhaustive list of every song that includes a sample of 1982's "Change The Beat" by hip-hop pioneer Beside/Fab 5 Freddy. Appearing in 1,269 different tracks, it wins the gold for most sampled song of all time.
Spanning from its release in 1982, bits of "Change The Beat" have appeared in Rough Cut by Kid Frost (1984), "Hey Young World" by Slick Rick (1988), "Organ Donor" by DJ Shadow (1997), "Intergalactic" by The Beastie Boys, "Thrift Shop" by Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis (2012), and "Catchin' the Vibe" by Quasimoto (2013).
On a more microscopic level, the most sampled section of the song is when Beside's Fab 5 Freddy uses a vocoder to announce, "Ahhh, this stuff is really fresh," which was first used by Herbie Hancock in 1983 for his single "Rockit."
The track is a symbol of the emergence of hip-hop culture, originally recorded when once disjointed artforms like graffiti and breakdancing first synergized with hip-hop music; and Freddy was an undisputed bridge between those elements.
