On the front cover of the October/November editon of XXL Magaine, a headline reads: "Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy," accompanied by a photo of the West-Coast hip-hop group. The fact that Kendrick Lamar was singled out as the leader of the group upset the other members, leading Schoolboy Q to call it "disrespectful" and Ab-Soul to tweet: "If y'all keep printing 'Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy' I will remove myself from the group. Thanks."
In a recent interview with Bootleg Kev, Soul clarified what his tweet meant, and who it was directed towards. "That was for all blogs, all social media, all media outlets," he said. "A lot of them are printing it like that and that's just not what- that's not the name of the group..."
This is not the only magazine controversy that Black Hippy has been a part of recently. In a recent GQ feature, which awarded Kendrick Lamar: "Rapper of the Year," Black Hippy's label, TDE, spoke out against the article, calling it "offensive" and filled with "racial overtones."
