Some directors go through dry spells and end up making movies that aren't as good as some of their best. The Coen Brothers, for instance, may have created classics like Fargo and No Country For Old Men, but they've also turned in some stinkers like The Ladykillers. However, one guy who's managed to maintain a near-perfect batting average is Paul Thomas Anderson.
While some of his movies aren't as popular as others, there's no denying that a string of pictures like Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and The Master is very impressive. So naturally there's interest in his back catalog and the possibilities for sequels it offers.
However, according to NME, Anderson doesn't seem interested in following up his classics -- in particular, he doesn't see a future for Boogie Nights' Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg). When asked about the changing porn industry and how the internet would affect the earlier film's main character, he said:
You're right...the whole online thing. [But] you know, I wonder how many of these characters would even still be alive? Probably a few of them, but I fear that most of them might be dead. I doubt Dirk Diggler's still alive. He'd probably be gone. I couldn't see him making it.
Still, if Anderson isn't interested in tracking the careers of porn actors through the '80s, maybe some enterprising filmmaker will do it instead.
