Brooklyn-based indie/contemporary classical label New Amsterdam Records has been celebrating their five-year anniversary by releasing a remix of Caroline Shaw's Partita's, as performed by Roomful of Teeth, weekly as a part of their 2013 fundraiser. This week — week 7 of 8 in the project — they've released a beautiful remix by Violetness. Previous participants have included Olga Bell, No Lands (Michael Hammond), Morgan Packard, and others.
Violetness, aka Vanessa Upton / aka the constructor of the below remix, is a Peruvian-American electronic musician whose debut solo effort Last Night in My Dreams, I Was Talking To You was released in February.
Last April Shaw became the youngest composer to ever win the Pulitzer Prize. Her Partitas are an a cappella piece composed for the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, who released their debut album via New Amsterdam. The album was nominated this year for Grammys in the Best Small Ensemble Recording and Best Contemporary Classical Composition categories.
This project is done in conjunction with and released through WNYC's Q2 Music. The final remix of this project will be released the first week of 2014.
