Static saturated washes and reverbed strings that sounds like they've been recorded to a handheld voice recorder from a dusty LP form the repetitious foundation of "Grey Over Blue," a new track from UK producer/performer Actress.
The track is the A-side of a surprise 12" from Actress, released on Friday via Werkdiscs / Ninja Tune. It's also the first new material we've got from Darren Cunningham aka Actress since the announcement of a three-disc follow-up to 2012's RIP, which will be released on January 28 via Werkdiscs.
The forthcoming full length, titled Ghettoville, is being sold as the final album Cunningham will ever release. (Well, at least his final as Actress.) The oblique, yet poetic, statement about the album says "A fix is no longer a release, it's a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues." It conludes: "R.I.P. Music 2014."
Take a listen to "Grey Over Blue" below and prep yourself for a large release early in 2014 from Actress.
