When we shared “Conservatory” from the New Jersey producer’s new EP, I unabashedly described him as part of a stylistic continuum of some highly esteemed producers like Clams Casino, Friendzone, and with consideration of his earlier hip-hop centric work, even the more popular Ryan, Hemsworth. Listening to Yurei—a work that Ryan Evans hopes to help demarcate the notion of him as an electronic, singular artist from his reputation as sole rap producer—we are perplexed in the best of ways. The vocal sampling and manipulation we’d normally expect is still present, but in most exciting instances on the EP they are part of UK rhythms (“Our Pain,” “Let It All Go”), which are very much new to Evans’ hand. Anyway, as you’ll see, success ensues for the producer.
