One big nod your way if you’ve been keeping up with recent activity of label 1080p. Since June of this year, the Vancouver-based imprint has provided a welcoming onslaught of masterful dance music catering to the newly realized mass of cassette pursuers, including the inaugurating Home Remedies EP from former LOL Boy half Markus Garcia (which was also Garcia’s solo debut release under his Heartbeat(s) moniker). Chrome Split—the fourth and latest to be singed for 1080p—is the first joint effort from Vancouver club experimenters Bobby Draino and Xophie Xweetland. An interesting dual outing without a doubt, the EP sees each producer taking a side of the tape leading to a quite differentiated split that seems to sonically simulate the title of the project—and perhaps the artwork—better with each passing track. Xweetland’s three tracks amount to angry, brash ambient techno with episodes of drone. With Draino on the flip, you have a brighter engagement with shuffling house beats, swirling 303s (which retain some of the previous grit) and perhaps most effective, more sampling.
