Fiona Apple Contributes Original Song To Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40'

Fiona Apple, who made headlines last month when she was arrested on possession charges, may have found her match in perennial pot humorist Judd Apatow. The Huffington Post reports that Apple is contributing a new track to Apatow's upcoming release, This is 40. Studio execs are hopeful that "Dull Tool" (for real) will secure an Academy Award nod for Best Original Song, even if the film itself falls short of Oscar consideration (Apatow, if you remember, issued a passionate plea to the Academy to add a comedy category to the very drama-centric awards show).

This is the first time Apple's contributed an original song to a film soundtrack, though she covered The Beatles' "Across the Universe" for 1998's Pleasantville and her song "Paper Bag" was featured in the Apatow-produced hit Bridesmaids. Jon Brion, who composed the score for This is 40, previously worked with the singer on her albums When the Pawn... and Extraordinary Machine.

Universal Pictures updated its Academy Awards site to include a heap of extras, including a PDF copy of the full script (at a whopping 140+ pages), clips from Brion's score, and a list of all the actors and support crew and their respective Oscar nomination categories.

This is 40 is a spin-off of Apatow's Knocked Up. It follows Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann's characters as they get older, saggier, and far too comfortable with each other's bodily functions. The film hits theaters Dec. 21. Watch the official trailer below.
