John O. aka Diamond Rings has been making a living as as an effervescent pop artist striving to make music as impactful as possible and all the while retaining the ability to dig deep inside and write songs that we're all familiar with. Love, rejection, fear, and heartbreak are just some of the themes he touches upon. He explored all of these universal ideas in this album Free Dimensional.
And recently, while preparing for a tour with OMD Diamond Rings had recorded a cover of Jimmy Buffet's "They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More." Diamond Rings explains why he chose to cover this song and what makes the song quite alluring:
My father was a big Jimmy Buffett fan and the song "They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More" (from his 1970 album White Sportcoat and a Pink Crustacean) is one that I remember hearing around the house as a boy. It's too bad that most people just think of "Margaritaville" when they think of Buffett because lots of his lesser known work is full of beautiful lyrical sentiments. "Carmen" seemed fitting to perform at Capitol Studios because it's all about actress Carmen Miranda and Hollywood, Calfornia as it existed before all the paparazzi and plastic surgery. Interestingly, Miranda died of a heart attack in 1955 only one year before the 1956 completion of West Hollywood's iconic Capitol Tower in which this version was recorded.
