David Fincher wants to reunite with his frequent collaborator Brad Pitt for an adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
According to Variety, nothing is official yet, but Fincher is already eyeing Pitt to star in the adaptation, which tells the adventurous tale of Captain Nemo and his submarine the Nautilus. Pitt is being considered for the role of Ned Land, the submarine's harpoonist.
Like the upcoming remake of Scarface, this adaptation is receiving a rewrite. The script had originally been written by Scott J. Burns, but Andrew Kevin Walker (who penned Fincher's Se7en) is now rewriting it.
Burns told Coming Soon, "As it happened, David and I both loved 20,000 Leagues when we were kids. It was one of my favorite books. So David came to me and said that Sean Bailey had contacted him about doing 20,000 Leagues at Disney and I said, 'I would love to do that.'"
Apparently Disney has placed a three-month hold on the project, while they decide whether production will move forward.
The original 1954 Disney version featured James Mason as Captain Nemo and Kirk Douglas as Ned.
Brad Pitt starred in Fincher's films Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
