Each city sort of has that local band that teeters on a borderline between an obscure local favorite to a burgeoning "they're going to blow up," sort of band. I guess you could say that is what Boyfrndz is to the southern music boiling pot, Austin. While there are a plethora of humble garage bands, math rock outfits,and spiked up metal heads in the city, Boyfrndz stands out amongst the rest of the crowd.
With their newest single, "Water Weight," the three- piece outfit has a new five track EP coming out titled Natures that is produced by the former Mars Volta's organist, Ikey Owens. It would be easy to label them as another math rock band with undeniable tracings of Sonic Youth and Animal Collective, but that would do them an injustice. For every billowing climax, there is a soft dissonant tangent that beautifully froths beneath the elongated guitar silhouettes. Their modus operandi is a paradox that works off tension and release, exhaustion and redemption- producing songs that are satisfying but also exciting.
With "Water Weight," delicate guitar shapes simultaneously dim and shimmer with soaring and drawn out timbres, leaving a blinding incandescence. All the while silver stained guitar chords and barraging drum patterns crash like a multitude of waves, drowning you in an amniotic ocean of passionate and emotive melodies.
